Carter's Review
Aalto 57 is the rental section of the 65-story residential tower on the southwest corner of Second Avenue and 57th Street that opened in 2016 and is distinguished by the concave windows that change slightly in size as the tower rises.
The rental section comprises 21 floors in the base of the building and contains 175 apartments.
The condominium apartment section comprises the top 33 floors and has an address of 252 East 57th Street.
The project was developed by the World Wide Group and Rose Associates and designed by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill. A terrace was designed by Matthews Nielson Landscape Architects.
An earlier design of the top of the tower was more dramatic with sharp angles and a very thin waist.
The building is just to the east of a new High School of Art and Design on 56th Street that was part of the development.
Bottom Line
A major new development for the Sutton Place neighborhood, this rental section is the base of a stunning 65-story tower, which is highlighted by narrow and very elegant concave curves and whose top is condominiums.
