Overview of Selene at 100 East 53rd Street

Developed by Aby Rosen and designed by Sir Norman Foster, Selene became an instant landmark when it rose at 100 East 53rd Street, adjacent to Mies van der Rohe’s venerable Park Avenue Seagram building; the 63-story mixed-use tower set back above a 9-story podium is comprised of 94 residential condominium units, with the sleek and slender silver tower serving as an ethereal contrast to the Seagram building’s landmarked bronze façade.

On the building’s lower floors is Le Jardinier, a restaurant conceived by Michelin-starred chef Alain Verzeroli, a protege of famous chef Joël Robuchon, both with interiors by celebrated French designer Joseph Dirand. Residents have exclusive access to both restaurants via a private elevator and entrance as well as special seating and dining privileges.

Residences include tower homes and loft apartments; all have dramatic architectural flourishes like high ribbed concrete ceilings, polished concrete flooring, custom millwork and floor-to-ceiling double-pane windows. Kitchens feature wire-brushed oak cabinetry, Carrara marble countertops and backsplashes and integrated Gaggenau stainless steel appliances. Modern comforts include in-unit Miele washer/dryers; some homes will have private elevator entrances. A seemingly endless list of amenities includes a 24-hour doorman and concierge service, a wellness center, spa, a 60-foot pool, yoga and Pilates rooms, a library and lounges.

From its earliest days the tower has had celebrity appeal, attracting power couples George and Amal Clooney and Cindy Crawford and Rande Gerber, who were likely to have been attracted to the building’s central-to-everything–including both express and local subways–east side location with a sophisticated classic Manhattan vibe. Cultural icons like the MoMA and Rockefeller Center share the neighborhood, and it’s a short walk to Central Park. In every direction–from snacking at Ess-A-Bagel and Whole Foods Market to shopping at Bloomingdales, Bergdorf’s, and on Madison Avenue–quality is a neighborhood affair.

Carter’s Review

"This 63-story, mixed-use tower at 122 East 53rd Street on the southwest corner of 54th Street and Lexington Avenue was developed by Aby Rosen and designed by Sir Norman Foster.

The 10-story base of the development, which was initially known as 610 Lexington Avenue, is on the avenue and the tower, which rises 712 feet, is mid-block, and uses air rights purchased from the adjacent Seagram Building at 375 Park Avenue, which Mr. Rosen owns, and the black-glass tower at 600 Lexington Avenue.  "
