Carter Horsley's Building Review Carter Horsley
May 23, 2017

Carter's Review

This huge, mid-block apartment complex at 525 West 52nd Street in the Clinton District has 392 rental apartments, of which 79 are “affordable.”

The complex consists of a 22-story building on 52nd Street and a 14-story building on 53rd Street.  It was completed in 2017 by Taconic Investment Partners and Mitsui Fudosan.

It was designed by Handel Architects with “lifestyle programming” by LIVunLTD and pet-care services by Throw Me A Bone.

Bottom Line

A large, attractive, mid-block rental complex in Clinton with small apartments but tons of amenities.

Description

The front façade on 52nd Street steps down in 4 stages over a three-story base with two-window days with one corner windows separated by 9-story-high recessed sections, all beneath further recessed, light-blue top with horizontal motif with one end with 9 setback terraces.

The second and third stories are nearly divided into single-window segments while the ground floor is divided into segments equal to two single-window segments on the 2nd and 3rd floors.

This asymmetrical composition is strong but quite complex, and therefore impressive: one can romantically conjure, with a few dramamines, a mightly oceanliner chopping through heavy seas….

Amenities

The building has a lobby lounge with a fireplace and a landscaped atrium, a fitness center and yoga studio, a rooftop lounge and sundeck, a sports lounge with billiards and two golf simulators, an outdoor amenity deck with grilling stations, bocce, ping pong and shuffleboard, resident storage, 24-hour attended lobby, conference room, bicycle room, doorman, live-in superintendent, package room, and screening room.
