Carter Horsley's Building Review Carter Horsley

Carter's Review

Nicely tucked close to an entrance to the Lincoln Tunnel, this red-brick rental apartment building was developed in 1990 by TF Cornerstone, one of the city's leading residential builders.

The 18-story building has 86 apartments, mostly studios and one-bedrooms.

The building, which is known as Plaza West and is located at 444 West 35th Street, has an attractive porte-corchere with a stepped portico whose motif is repeated on the building's roofline.

It has a doorman, video security, a sundeck, valet service, double-pane windows and permits small dogs.

Located between Ninth and Tenth Avenues, the building is on the western fringe of the city's bustling Garment Center and it is also not far from the Javits Convention Center to the north and west and the Hudson River and the Penn Station/Madison Square Garden complex to the east and south.

There is, not surprisingly, considerable traffic in this area. The adjacency to the tunnel entrance, however, affords considerable light and air for this otherwise quite congested area.

There is good crosstown bus service on 34th Street and the future prospects for the area are quite good as the renaissance of the Chelsea District to the south has brought many new restaurants and art galleries to the vicinity.

There are major plans to eventually develop the rail yards, known as Hudson Yards, just to the south, and the renaissance of the Times Square and West 42nd Street corridor has tremendously revitalized the West Side.
