Carter's Review

This 12-story apartment building at 411 West 35th Street is the first of two similar gateway buildings planned by YYY Development & Construction at Dyer Avenue.

This building, which is known as The Lewis, is on the northeast corner of Dyer Avenue between 9th and 10th avenues, which is an exit from the Lincoln Tunnel.

Lisa Chow of Workshop Design + Architecture was the design architect and Aufgang Architecture is the architect of record.  This one was completed in 2017 and has 186  rental apartments with commercial space on the ground floor.  The other planned building is at 435 West 35th Street and will have 125 residential units.

INC Architecture and Design did the interiors.

Bottom Line

This  large, mid-rise pair of greyish apartment buildings on Dyer Avenue not far from the Hudson Yards in west midtown is somber but lively because of its angular massing and façade textuality.

Description

These two "bunker" buildings appear massive despite their relatively modest size and angled massing but their dark grey striated piers and bright white façade outlining create a rigorous and intriguing textural composition.

This building has a setback at the seventh floor.

The lobby has a "skybridge" for various fitness rooms.

Amenities

The building has a 24-hour concierge, a roof deck, a fitness center, bicycle storage and a garage.  Each residential floor has an amenity space.

Apartments

Apartments have wide plank oak floors, high ceilings, double-pane windows, solar shades and washers and dryers.

Kitchens have Italian cabinetry, silk black Caesarstone countertops and paneled appliances.

Apartment S is a one-bedroom unit with an entry foyer that leads to a large angled living/dining room with an open kitchen and a large terrace.

Apartment M is a two-bedroom unit with an angled living/dining room with an open kitchen and an angled bedroom.

Apartment N is a studio unit with an angled balcony.

Another studio has a large angled living/dining room with an open kitchen.
