Carter Horsley's Building Review Carter Horsley

Carter's Review

This very slick, 36-story rental apartment tower at 225 East 39th Street in Murray Hill close to the entrance to the Queens-Midtown Tunnel was erected in 2017 by Fisher Brothers.

It was designed by Handel Associates and The Rockwell Group was the interior designer.

It has 373 apartments of which 75 are “affordable.”

It is known as House 39.

Bottom Line

With its rounded and reflective south end highlighted by seemingly random vertical façade strips, this is one of the more handsome towers between the United Nations complex and the cluster of residential buildings around the Queens-Midtown Tunnel.

Description

This building looks like it entered a pinball wizard contest with its many vertical façade strips that interrupt its very smooth, reflective façades but which, unfortunately, do not light up randomly.  Nevertheless, one can easily imagine Elton John doing a boogie on its plaza as he contemplates the heavens and the Midtown East sky reflecting on the tower’s façades.

The south façade is very gracefully curved and without setbacks although there is an indentation near the top. The rest of the building’s exterior is rectilinear although its façade also sport some vertical strips.

The building has a curved, double-height lobby with a slatted rear wall and a large spiral staircase to an amenity level.  The building has a very large entrance marquee and sidewalk landscaping.

Amenities

The building has a great many amenities including a concierge, a roof deck with cabanas and BBQ stations, an outdoor movie screen, a fireplace, bocce ball, shuffle board, a photo booth, a live-in superintendent, a children’s playroom, a curved swimming pool, a library, a fitness center, a driveway, a plaza, and courtyard garden.
