54 Bond Street is a landmark cast iron building constructed in 1874 by Harry Engelbert in the French Second Empire style. Originally built as the Atlantic Savings Bank (later the Bond Street Savings Bank and German Exchange Bank), the ornate corner building became home to the off Broadway Bouwerie Lane Theatre in 1963. Listed in the National Registry of Historic Places, the building was acquired by developer Alan Gordon in 2007 and converted by Steven Harris Architects into a boutique three unit residential condominium with ground floor retail.
The building comprises two full floor loft apartments and a triplex penthouse across seven floors. The full floor units on the third and fourth floors each offer 2,274 square feet with 12 to 13 foot ceilings, Belgian oak herringbone flooring, and 25×21 foot corner living rooms wrapped by six oversized windows. Both feature gourmet kitchens with Wolf and Sub-Zero appliances, 21 foot master suites with marble baths outfitted with Dornbracht and Kohler fixtures, walk in dressing rooms, and dedicated laundry rooms with Miele washers and dryers.
The triplex penthouse spans the top three floors with approximately 4,863 square feet of interior space plus substantial outdoor terraces. The main floor features a 41 foot great room with gas fireplace flowing into a 31 foot dining room, along with an ebony cabinetry kitchen equipped with La Cornue and Sub-Zero appliances and a wine tasting room. The upper level includes a 23 foot family room, a master suite with dual split master baths and customized dressing rooms, and a second bedroom. The rooftop level offers a full kitchen and two planted entertaining terraces.
The penthouse was renovated by renowned Belgian designer Vincent Van Duysen, marking his only private residence project in New York City. The meticulous renovation features French oak flooring, sandblasted limestone, honed Carrara marble, and dark bronze metal elements throughout. Upgrades include 28 oversized sound attenuating windows, new structural beams, new HVAC systems, Van Cronenburg hardware, Vola fixtures, and Domotica smart home controls. The rooftop includes landscape design by Piet Oudolf, with a spa area housing a concealed firepit, hot tub, and sauna integrated into a continuous natural stone element.
