Overview of The Police Building at 240 Centre Street

The Police Building, a grand Belle-Epoque landmark designed by architects Hoppin & Koen, is located at 240 Centre Street in Nolita/Little Italy. It served as the headquarters for the NYPD until 1973.

Originally constructed in 1909, the Police Building was vacant for more than a decade following the NYPD’s transition to a new facility near City Hall. It was ultimately converted into 55 apartments in the late 1980s, with the group overseeing the renovation ensuring residences maintained the building’s singular architectural touches. There are varied floor plans, as a result, and units are spacious with tall ceilings – many higher than 15 feet – and open layouts.

A doorman, concierge, and live-in resident manager are on staff, and amenities include a sunlit fitness center opening onto a planted terrace. It is conveniently located close to the shops and restaurants in Nolita, TriBeCa, SoHo and NoHo. Balthazar and 19 Cleveland are but two of the popular restaurants located nearby, downtown designer shopping is immediately adjacent, and a downtown Eataly location is on the way. Public transportation is also nearby.

Carter’s Review

"Smack in the middle of Little Italy's tenements, the Police Building at 240 Centre Street between Broome and Grand streets is a spectacular Baroque-revival-style palace.

It was designed by Hoppin & Koen in 1909, when architects and planners were still under the influence of the image of the "White City," the Beaux Arts inspired notion of a beautiful city that had been highlighted at the World's Colombian Exposition in Chicago in 1893."
