Carter's Review
This striking, 6-story building at 800 Union Street in the Park Slope section of Brooklyn opened in 2017 and has 28 condominium apartments.
It was built by Midwood Investment & Development and Meltzer Associates LLC. Christian Zambrano of Silbertekture was the architect.
The building was formerly a parking garage.
Bottom Line
A very good, mid-rise architectural composition that would be even more imposing if it were all black.
Description
This building has many fine design elements that do not quite mesh perfectly as it is substantially weakened by the pale orange brickwork on the second through the fifth floors of the base. There is, of course, nothing inherently wrong with such masonry, but that’s section’s protruding window bays and spandrels are exceptionally attractive as is the setback shorter sixth floor with arched windows and an all-black metallic façade and the even smaller all black, multi-paned top seventh floor.
The three large and dark spandrels in the building’s mid-section are all different and very strong. They also pick up the black horizontal motif of the ground floor bandcourse and entrance marque. The detailing and proportions are excellent.
Amenities
The building has a doorman, an attended lobby, a landscaped roof deck with barbecue grill, fire pit lounge, outdoor showers, a fitness center, a children’s playroom, a billiards lounge and party room with warming kitchen, a bicycle and stroller storage, storage bins and a pet spa.
