Carter's Review

This large and curved, 15-story apartment building at 4455 Douglas Avenue at 236th Street is a Riverdale landmark because of is configuration and amenities and its very prominent and desirable location overlooking the Hudson River.

It is known as Hayden on the Hudson.

It was erected as a rental building in 1969 on a 9-acre cul-de-sac fronting on Palisade Avenue.

In 1977, it was converted into 171 condominium apartments.

It was designed by Wechsler & Schimenti with Henry Kibel as an associate architect.

Bottom Line

Riverdale’s answer to Washington’s Watergate complex, this handsome, large, curved residential building has many amenities, large apartments, some with fireplaces, and spectacular views of the Hudson River.

Description

One side of the building has very large balconies that form a very large curve facing the Hudson River.

The other side has a curved façade with some projecting piers and a fair bit of red brick fronting on its large curved and landscaped driveway with a canopied entrance.

Amenities

The building has a full-time doorman, a large, heated, outdoor swimming pool, tennis courts, a fitness center, valet parking, an on-site property manager, a laundry, and a community room.

Apartments

Apartment 3B is a three-bedroom unit with a long entry foyer that leads to a 19-foot-wide dining room and a 24-foot-long living room with a fireplace and a 24-foot-wide terrace.  The enclosed kitchen is 17-foot-wide.

Apartment 10B is a three-bedroom unit with an entry foyer that leads to a 19-foot-wide dining room next to an 18-foot-long living room with a fireplace and a 14-foot-wide balcony.  The kitchen is enclosed, windowed and 17-feet long.

Apartment 4L is a three-bedroom unit with a long entry foyer that leads to an angled 24-foot-long dining room next to a 17-foot-long kitchen and an angled, 21-foot-long living room with a fireplace and a 23-foot-wide balcony.  The 17-foot-wide master bedroom has a slightly curved window wall and a slightly angled wall that contains a small, angled bathroom.

Apartment 7K is a two-bedroom unit with a 26-foot-long living room that opens onto a 12-foot-wide, windowed dining room and a 57-foot-long, slightly curved terrace.  The kitchen is 9-feet-long

Apartment 7D is a two-bedroom unit with an entry foyer that leads to a 19-foot-long living room with a 12-foot-square, windowed dining room and a 46-foot-long slightly curved terrace.  The kitchen is 10-feet-wide.
