Carter's Review

This very handsome. 12-story building at 498 West End Avenue on the southwest corner at 84th  Street was designed in 1910 by Neville & Bagge, who also designed 325, 490, 590, 702-4, 789, 801, 817, 850, 851, 860-8, 929 and 933 West End Avenue.

CetraRuddy was the architect for the 37 condominium apartment conversion, which was undertaken by Samson Development.  The building initially has 48 rental units and was acquired by Samson for $52.5 million in 2012.

In 2014, the city’s Landmarks Preservation Commission approved a one-story rooftop addition, a new cornice and a new entrance.

Bottom Line

A very handsome  pre-war lovingly restored with a grand marquee and a fine cornice in a very desirable section of the Upper West Side that is convenient to Zabar’s, Barnes & Noble, and many restaurants. 

Description

A Beaux-Arts-style building with extremely handsome, wide marque with globular sconces leading to a new lobby with Vanillis Pearl and St. Laurent marbles and six-step-up staircase.

The building has a three-story rusticated base and sidewalk landscaping.

Amenities

Concierge, children’s playroom with pin art wall, fitness center, storage, and bicycle room.  It permits pets.

Apartments

Apartments had double-glazed windows installed in 2014 and laundry closets with LG washers and vented dryers.

Kitchens are enclosed by glass sliding doors and have chocolate-stained cerused oak cabinetry with light bronze trim and pulls, Calacatta marble slab countertops and backsplashes and white oak floors.  The kitchens have Miele refrigerators and dishwashers and Bertazzoni ranges

Baths have Blue de Savoie and Vanilla Pearl honed marble mosaic floors, Vanilla Pearl marble walls, radiant floor heating and Zuma tubs.

Apartment 9A is a 5-bedroom unit with a 15-foot-wide entry foyer that leads to a 30-foot-long great room with sliding doors to an 18-foot-wide family room that opens onto a windowed, 18-foot-wide kitchen.

Apartment 6A is a four-bedroom unit with a 15-foot-long entry foyer that leads to a 29-foot-long corner great room next to a windowed, 19-foot-long kitchen with sliding doors and an island.
