Carter Horsley's Building Review Carter Horsley
Feb 01, 2018
78 CITYREALTY RATING

Carter's Review

This very distinguished building at 251 West 92nd Street on the northwest corner of Broadway was erected in 1925 as The Roxborough.

It was designed by Neville & Bagge, the architects of the more spectacular Cornwall on the northwest corner of Broadway and 90th Street, one of the city's rare and important Art Nouveau buildings, and of the very handsome building at 42-48 East 20th Street.

This 12-story building replaced the Roxborough apartment building that had been erected in 1911 by the Yorkshire Realty and Building Company, headed by Isaac and Henry Meyer, who had recently sold the Allerton to Augustus Van Horne Stuyvesant.  That building changed hands several times in the early 1920s until it was acquired in 1921 by J. Adolph Mollenhauer, who, according to The New York Times, was "prominently identified with sugar interests in this country."

It has 86 rental apartments.

Bottom Line

One of the more elegant, pre-war apartment buildings on Broadway, this building has an elaborate entrance and lobby and apartments with high ceilings and some decorative fireplaces.

Description

The elegant building has an elaborate, canopied entrance flanked by balustrades with tall light stanchions, a three-step-up entrance with an arched pediment supported by tall columns and relief sculptures with a window on the west side.

The building has  a large lightwell above the side-street entrance.

It has a very large and elegant, mirrored lobby with a chandelier and a very attractive, colorful and large skylight.

The building has a balustraded bandcourse above the first and the 10th floors and simpler bandcourses above the third and fourth floor.  There are handsome balconies on the fourth floor and the building has quoins.

The frontage on Broadway has retail spaces.

The building is convenient to transportation and Riverside Park.

The building, which is pet-friendly, has a 24-hour doorman and a laundry.
