Description
Coming back on in January!A wildly romantic creation, a reimagining of urban living, this house atop a classic Soho loft building defies easy categorization. The owner collaborated with Steven Harris to achieve a superb design, both personal and wonderfully practical. Each room, each aspect is hand crafted, and created just for the space.
A steel and glass conservatory suffused with light is an awe-inspiring welcome upon exiting the elevator. The owner has made a wintergarden of the room, soaring up to 18' ceilings, a wall of windows to the west. Through glass doorways one enters the main living room, also with 18' ceilings with a intensely dramatic wall made of charred-wood panels reclaimed from the roof, which can open onto the adjacent dining room, which can seat 24 comfortably.
Then continuing to the wonderful kitchen carefully crafted, with French encaustic floor tiles, 1930's Monel sink, Traulsen refrigerator, and Blue Star stove. The cabinetry is made of recycled hemlock, with zinc pulls and hand selected subway tiles. A reflecting pool and covered patio is just beyond.
The steel stairway, with light reflecting glass disks embedded in each tread , takes you to the upper floors.
The middle level has a large office which overlooks the living room below, and a glorious master bedroom suite, with marble bathroom and gorgeous copper bath. The suite gives on to a vast multi-level terrace, lushly and wildly planted.
On the upper level is another unique and exotic bedroom and dressing room, with lovely soaking tub in the bathroom. The glass enclosed lounge is a place for stargazing year round, and beyond it yet another planted terrace looking in all directions.
The grand overall effect is unlike anything else, eclectic, evocative and harmonious.
