Carter's Review

This very handsome, 7-story building at 142 Duane Street in the TriBeCa South Historic District was erected in 1859-60 and has 8 co-operative apartments.  A former warehouse, it was converted to a residential co-operative in 1997 by Stephen E. Corelli, the building's owner, and had a rooftop addition.

The 41-foot-wide building has 8 apartments.

It and 144 and 146 Duane Street were built for James Bankard and Benjamin Hutton, dry goods merchants.

The mid-block building is between Church Street and West Broadway.  It is two blocks east of the charming triangular Duane Park and about a block and a half north of the handsome Bogardus Garden on West Broadway.

It is convenient to numerous restaurants and public transportation.

Bottom Line

This is the easternmost of a trio of very similar, mid-19th Century buildings on Duane Street that the Landmarks Preservation Commission declared were "among the most impressive" in the TriBeCa South Historic District.

Description

According to the designation report for the TriBeCa South Historic District, the three buildings on this block erect by Bankard and Hutton "are among the most impressive" in the district.

"Inspired by the renaissance palaces of Rome and Florence, these forty-foot wide marble fronted  buildings are enriched with bracketed triangular pediments and molded lintels, eared surrounds, molded sills, corner quoins and, at No. 144, an attic frieze," the report continued.

"Bankard and Hutton also commissioned the handsome pair of buildings are 148 and 150-152 Duane Street (1864-65) with sandstone façades designed in a transitional style that combines elements of the Italianate and Second Empire styles.  The repetition of such elements as quoins, string courses, molded window surrounds, and a uniform cornice line creates cohesive streetscapes," the report noted.

Amenities

The building has fireplaces, an elevator and an intercom.  It allows cats and dogs.
