Carter's Review
This very handsome, 6-story building on the northeast corner at Reade Street in TriBeCa is known as 16 Hudson Street and consists of three structures on the block bounded by Reade Street, Hudson Street, Duane Street and West Broadway.
The handsome, red-brick building was erected as a warehouse in 1890 and converted to a co-operative in 1979.
It has 25 apartments and 8 retail units.
It is also known as 158 Duane Street, 114-116 Reade Street and 110-116 West Broadway.
Bottom Line
This impressive complex consists of two very distinctive and substantial red-brick structures with fine detailing and large apartments at an extremely prominent site in TriBeCa that is convenient to transportation, the World Trade Center and City Hall Park.
Description
The southern building faces a triangular intersection and is notable for its twinned piers and dentilated arched windows on the second, third and fourth floors that also have stone decorative elements above the windows. The first floor has rusticated stone columns at its corners and stone elements on its dentilated arches above the retail fenestration. Above the first floor is a stone stringcourse above a masonry row of dentils that is also repeated above the fourth floor. The lower third of the first floor is faced with stone.
Windows are multi-paned and there is a band of decorative masonry and stone “diamonds” just beneath the roof line that is a pleasant alternative to a cornice. There are some window air-conditioners.
The building has a three-step-up entrance on Hudson Street framed by thin columns painted green.
The north building is more robust with a real cornice. The masonry base of the building is rusticated with black inset windows with transoms. The second story has two thin stone stringcourses.
The top floor windows are arched and the corner is chamfered.
Amenities
The building has a full-time superintendent, a key-locked elevator, basement storage, and a roof deck. The building is pet-friendly.
