Carter's Review
The Brooklyn Grand is an 8-story rental apartment building at 774 Grand Street at Humboldt
Street in East Williamsburg erected in 2016 by Jeff Kurtz of Kamson Corporation and Dean Marchi of Grand Street Development.
Designed by The Meshberg Group and Gene Kaufman, the building has have 64 rental apartments and about 2,000 square feet of retail space. Twenty percent of the units are reserved for tenants earning 60 percent of the area median income.
It replaces a one-story Liberty Department Stores building.
Bottom Line
A very impressive 6-story red-brick base that is incongruous with a two-story, set-back with a zig-zagged black-and-gray façade that could serve nicely as a drunken chessboard.
Description
The base of the building is very attractive with large, inset multi-paned windows above a stringcourse over the ground floor with some small arched windows above a handsome dentilated bandcourse over the fifth floor.
There are two floors setback over the base with a black-and-gray façade that is rather boldly, as opposed to subtlely, shifted between the floors in a rather curious juxtaposition.
The building has a hanging marquee entrance and no sidewalk landscaping.
There are light sconces on the ground floor between all the large retail windows.
The entrance has an industrial feel with exposed brick walls, ceiling beams, an arched brick entrance to the elevators and hanging globe lights that the project maintains was intended “to honor the historic warehouse and cast-iron aesthetic of the area.”
Amenities
The building has a roof terrace with a fire pit, two grilling stations, adjacent wet bars, and an outdoor shower, a fitness center, a garage, a garden, storage and bicycle storage.
