Carter's Review

They say "they don't build 'em like they used to," but this 21-story, red-brick apartment tower will surely give many passersby a good double-take, for it is probably the closest thing in decades in appearance to the average, proverbial "pre-war" apartment building.

The Italian Renaissance palazzo-style design, moreover, is by Costas Kondylis, one of the city's pre-eminent architects of “post-war” and usually glitzy apartment towers.

The building has 38 condominium apartments.

The building was developed by Sidney Fetner Associates and The Gotham Organization, Inc.

Bottom Line

Across 84th Street from the famous Chapin School and diagonally across East End Avenue from Carl Schurz Park, this attractive building has very few apartments and great views.

Description

Most such "palazzo"-style buildings, of course, are quite boxy, and this does have a couple of setbacks above the 15th floor.

It has a two-story stone base, a bandcourse above the fifth floor, and the top floors at each setback possess stone reveals. The rusticated, red-brick pilasters between the third and fifth floors, and those on the setbacks, have stone capitals and bases - a nice touch.

The building's entrance has a large marquee.

Amenities

The building has a doorman, high-speed Internet access, a six-foot whirlpool bath and a washer-dryer unit in each apartment. The building has an indoor-outdoor children's playroom, a terrace, and a 24-hour, residents-only garage. Many of the apartments have views of the East River.

The building has no sidewalk landscaping, but allows pets and has tenant storage space.

Apartments

The apartments have formal dining rooms, eat-in kitchens and 9-foot-high ceilings.

Apartment 4C is a two-bedroom unit that has a 23-foot-long living room and an enclosed, 10-foot-long kitchen.

Apartment 8A is a two-bedroom unit that has a 16-foot-long entry foyer leading to a 17-foot-long library, a 23-foot-long living room, and a 21-foot-long enclosed dining room next to the enclosed, windowed, 15-foot-long kitchen.  The master bedroom is 27-feet-long.

Apartment 10A is a three-bedroom unit that has an entry foyer that leads to a gallery to the 23-foot-long living room, 18-foot-long library, and 22-foot-long enclosed dining room next to the 28-foot-long enclosed, windowed kitchen.
