Carter's Review

This handsome, red-brick apartment building at 240 West End Avenue on the southeast corner at 71st Street was designed by Rosario Candela and built in 1924 for the 280 West 71st Street Corporation, of which Joseph F. Faiella was president.

The 16-story building was converted from a rental to a condominium in 2009 and has 64 apartments.

Bottom Line

An attractive, pre-war building designed by Rosario Candela, this building has a prime Upper West Side location very close to the 72nd Street express subway station and an entrance to the West Side Highway. It is not far from the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts.

Description

The building has a very attractive three-story base with limestone window surrounds and a two-story limestone entrance surround with a canopy and sidewalk landscaping. The brick areas between the window surrounds on the third floor have attractive geometric angled designs. Some of the window surrounds on the top floor have arched tops.

There is a bandcourse above the second floor and a balustraded one above the 14th floor and stringcourses above the third and 16th floors.

There are some decorative wrought-iron balconies on the eighth floor.

Its original cornice was removed but replaced in the 2009 conversion.

The building has some protruding air-conditioners.

Amenities

The building has a doorman and a laundry room.
