Carter's Review
When it was erected in 1963, this large, beige-brick, midblock apartment house was on the fringes of the Upper East Side in a light-industrial area north of the hospital corridor along York Avenue. This dead-end block that overlooks the East River has since undergone a radical transformation with three major new luxury high-rise apartment towers that capitalize on the river views and the relocation of Sotheby's, the auction house, to the southeast corner at York Avenue. Sotheby's announced in July, 1998, that it would rebuild and enlarge its building on the block. The east end of the block is nicely paved and curved with seating to overlook the river and Roosevelt Island. This 19-story, 245-unit was converted to a cooperative in 1984. It has large picture windows and some terraces and an attractive lobby that connects through to 71st Street.
