Over the past several decades, Tribeca has emerged as a very high-end neighborhood for living and dining, due to its convenient location close to the Financial District and the rejuvenated Hudson River waterfront. According to The Wall Street Journal, Citigroup has taken advantage of Tribeca's perks by establishing its global headquarters at 388-390 Greenwich Street and embarking on a series of renovations to the 1980s-built complex.
Following Citicorp’s 1998 merger with Travelers Group Inc., the newly named Citigroup leased space at Travelers Group’s original Tribeca headquarters for years while keeping its global headquarters on Park Avenue. However, at the beginning of 2016, it bought the space for $2 billion from SL Green in a move that will save money, streamline its real estate footprint, and reflect a unified company. Renovations will create an open-office design and a more modern work environment.
