Updated October 31 with images of this year's costume prep.
Heidi Klum’s Halloween party is perhaps the most highly coveted invitation of the season. Celebrities of all stripes are only invited in if they are wearing an elaborate costume, but no one has yet outshone the hostess. Previous attention-grabbing costumes with elaborate makeup and prosthetics have included an elderly woman, a skinned cadaver, an ape, a butterfly, Lady Godiva, Jessica Rabbit, Betty Boop, Princess Fiona (with her husband as Shrek), and Hindu goddess Kali, to name just a few. All she has said so far is that this year’s costume will be “scarier than ever” and accompanied by a unique reveal. The process is playing out in the window of Amazon's bookstore at 7 East 34th Street.

"I'm going to set the bar really high and come up with the craziest outfits" - Heidi Klum on Halloween
Ms. Klum has already teased her costume by showing prosthetics samples, and has set a precedent for taking her social media followers behind the scenes. In 2016, when she went as herself and five clones, she got ready for the party at a penthouse in The Soho Gallery Building. Three stories of open space offered plenty of room to get ready, and a triple-height Great Room with 23’ ceilings and a linear gas fireplace made an excellent backdrop for the preparations. Additional features include a glass-enclosed Zen garden, custom chef’s kitchen, gracious master suite, striking wood staircase, and massive roof terrace. It is on the market for $11.995 million, significantly reduced from $15.95 million.
Cathedrale, a triple-height French-Mediterranean restaurant, will make a dramatic backdrop for this year’s festivities, where Questlove will be in charge of the music. It is well situated in the Moxy East Village, a 13-story, 286-key hotel designed by Stonehill Taylor. Company president Paul Taylor told CityRealty that every design begins with a detailed narrative, and this one tells of gritty East Village nightlife. Its iron-point Roman brick facade with board-formed concrete piers and walls pays homage to iconic neighbor Webster Hall.
A rooftop bar set to open next spring will be designed to resemble a backyard terrace and have a retractable glass roof that allows for entertaining in all seasons - including future Halloween parties! But this year, a flight of concrete stairs leads to Cathedrale, where interiors by Rockwell Group likewise pay tribute to past nightlife. The architecture nods to the interior of the Fillmore East, and vintage-style neon signs in the bar area reference other famous venues. The 26’ ceiling is covered in Fillmore, a wire mesh sculpture by Edoardo Tresoldi. Additional features include an open-hearth kitchen, an intimate private dining room, and an outdoor terrace with retractable roof.
