Since 1949, May has been observed as Mental Health Awareness Month in the United States. This national event was designed to bring attention to the importance of mental health and break the stigma around seeking treatment, but there are several big and small steps that people can take to improve their mental health all year long, including starting a meditation practice. Numerous studies have shown that a regular meditation practice can reduce negative emotions, increase patience and creativity, and lead to better stress management, and physical benefits like lower blood pressure, strengthened immune system help, and improved sleep quality are not to be overlooked.
As such, meditation, like yoga before it, has evolved from a niche New Age activity to a mainstream practice over the years. Not only have a number of meditation studios opened in New York, but smart residential developers have begun incorporating them into their buildings’ amenity packages, with Gramercy Square leading the charge with a studio co-developed by MNDFL. These are not blank white boxes, but dedicated spaces with a tranquil atmosphere designed to help residents in a meditation practice that might not be easy in a small apartment. Additionally, as the weather gets warmer, some can take their practice outside to meditation terraces.
