As the days in the Northern Hemisphere get shorter and cooler, they also become less conducive to outdoor activities like tennis and pickleball. For racquet sport enthusiasts, this is where squash comes in. This variation on tennis dates back to the 19th century and is played on a four-walled court, making it easier and more pleasant to stick with all year round. This is welcome news to both casual players and serious athletes training for the 2028 Summer Olympic Games in Los Angeles, where squash will be one of five new sports making its debut.

One downside to squash is that its particular setting makes pick-up games in makeshift settings difficult. Activists set up an outdoor court in Hamilton Fish Park in spring 2018, but vandalism and poor maintenance led to it being demolished a few years later.

There are a number of dedicated squash clubs throughout New York where people can get instruction and book a court, not to mention squash courts at gyms and private clubs. However, a growing number of residential buildings throughout the city offer squash courts in their amenity packages.
