Fall got off to a soggy start in New York City when the edges of subtropical storm Ophelia brought steady rain to the city starting on Saturday, which happened to be the autumnal equinox, and continuing into Tuesday evening. In the immediate term, this made for a miserable time to go out; in the longer term, wet weather like this can have detrimental effects on the intensity of the colors of fall foliage. Fall foliage expert and meteorologist Jim Salge points out that unusual weather patterns like heavy rainfall, heat waves, and poor air quality, all of which New York experienced this year, can cause the leaves to change color earlier than usual and dilute the colors.
But while the autumn leaves may not be as vivid as we usually like to see, Secret New York points out that if the leaves change color earlier, it will make for a longer foliage season overall – indeed, it’s already pre-peak in many parts of Central Park, and certain upstate areas are seeing the first hints of fall color. While trips to New England and upstate New York to look at fall foliage are popular activities for some city dwellers, parks in Manhattan and Brooklyn offer a front-row seat to the changing leaves without having to leave town. Residents of the following listings don't even have to leave their homes to make the most of it.
