The dog days of summer have come to a close and New York City real estate is in the midst of its annual slowdown as many locals have retreated to the Hamptons, Tri-state beach towns, or leafy areas in upstate New York or New England.

The term "dog days of summer" refers to the hottest period of the year in the northern hemisphere, specifically between July 3 and August 11 each year. The phrase derives from Hellenistic astrology and Roman astrology, when the Sun occupies the same area of the sky as the star Sirius and the constellation Canis Major (Latin translation: Greater Dog).

The trajectory of Sirius, the brightest star (besides the Sun) in our observable universe, rises and sets in sync with the Sun on July 23, and given Sirius' brightness, the ancient Romans believed that it gave off heat and could be attributed to the balmy weather notorious between late July and early August. Therefore, the term diēs caniculārēs, or “dog days.” came to mean the 20 days before and after Sirius' alignment with the Sun.

Approximately 220 Manhattan homes hit the market last week, at a median price of $1.665M for condos and $882K for co-ops. The priciest spread to come online happens to be one of the most expensive ever - a massive 11,535-square-foot duplex seemingly at the top of the world, but in reality on the 127th and 128th floors of Central Park Tower.

From its helicopter views, to its 50-foot long Grand Salon, the unit is surely one of the most jaw-dropping pads on the planet. Judging by the lack of details provided in the listing, this home most definitely has to be seen to be believed. To see this home and all others below, CityRealty is here to help you find the right agent (at no charge) to assist you in your search and negotiate on your behalf.
