New York has had some fairly mild weather as 2022 draws to a close (remember those 70-degree days at the beginning of November?), but ice skating rinks throughout Manhattan and Brooklyn opened in mid- to late November nevertheless. People come from all over the city, and the world in some cases, to skate at these iconic rinks. However, these apartment listings are located less than a mile from the rink, allowing for a short walk home - or hobble if you've fallen a little too often!

In the decades since 1936, when the ice skating rink was introduced as a temporary exhibit (or what we'd now describe as a pop-up), the Rink at Rockefeller Center has been featured in countless movies and television shows and become one of the world's most iconic skating spaces. In addition to the open skates, they offer group and private skating lessons alike. After it’s over, there is no shortage of dining options from quick snacks to multi-course meals surrounding the rink.

In recent years, some might have stayed away from Wollman Rink in Central Park owing to the fact that the Trump Organization was running it. However, the city canceled the contract following the events of January 6, 2021. Since then, a joint venture between Harris Blitzer Sports & Entertainment (owner of the New Jersey Devils), Related, and Equinox has taken over operations and spruced up the rink. They have also welcomed Harlem institution Melba’s to The Overlook above the rink and partnered with Nordstrom for special events and offerings. Nordstrom’s Santa Claus is visiting the rink on Fridays in December, and Chanukah on Ice will take place on December 19.

Bumper Cars on Ice returns in January; in the meantime, it offers Skate School and themed skate nights. There are all types of snacks for sale throughout the holiday market, which will be open through January 2, but The Lodge will be serving seasonal drinks and snacks as long as the Winter Village is open.

The rink at Manhattan West is one of the city’s newest, but that is not to say they have skimped on making it special. Olympians Melissa Gregory and Denis Petukhov are holding lessons here as well as Brookfield Place (see above), and visitors can skate to the tune of Holiday Harmonies on Wednesdays in December. It is directly across from Daily Provisions, which sells incredible hot chocolate and baked goods, and close to Citizens Food Hall and other notable restaurants for those seeking heartier fare.

Unlike the other skating rinks in New York, Vale Rink is coated with Glice, a unique synthetic ice that requires neither electricity nor water and requires skates compatible with its surface. Another key difference is its location at the top of the William Vale hotel, which allows for spectacular Manhattan skyline views. It also allows for easy access to southern Italian restaurant Leuca and rooftop bar Westlight.
