Between largely clement weather, recent graduates starting new jobs, and parents wanting to settle young children in before the school year begins, summer in New York City has become commonly known as rental season. The annual influx of summer interns is another key factor — while full-time workers have embraced a hybrid work model, interns and their employers alike prefer to have the interns in the office. As a result, thousands of young workers descend on New York every year. The vast majority seek short-term housing, though some opt to stay longer.
Some have the option of staying with a family member in the city, and the luckiest of all live in company-provided housing in luxury buildings (h/t Curbed). For everyone else, finding housing is significantly more challenging. Many companies don't provide meaningful housing stipends, most brokers can't help unless a client has a significant amount of money to spend, and people are swarming for the same summer housing. Some interns spend their summer couch-hopping as well as working; others pay stratospheric prices for spaces without basic amenities; and one intern went viral after revealing that it was cheaper to fly to her office once a week than rent an apartment in the area.
Against this backdrop, a total of 220 rental listings throughout New York City experienced price reduction from June 28 - July 4, 2023. During that same time period, 377 listings experienced price increases. A selection of notable discounts may be found below.
