Designed by the renowned architect Emery Roth, The Ardsley stands out for its unique Art Deco style, a departure from Roth’s previous works. Its bold design draws inspiration from a prehistoric Mayan temple, with no trace of historical styling. The building's buff brick surfaces are accented by striking vertical and horizontal bands of black brick that create a dynamic geometric pattern, giving the structure a powerful and original presence. Above the fifteenth floor, setbacks and cantilevered balconies culminate in a stepped-back water tower, contributing to an animated yet balanced profile.

Adding to its visual appeal is a zigzag cast-stone frieze with geometric patterns in four-color inlay at the base, and pink-tinted cast-stone door surrounds in curving geometric forms. While an early design included a lantern-like finial atop the water tank enclosure, the final structure forgoes this addition, allowing the building’s boxy composition and striped masonry to make a striking, original statement on its own.

In "The A.I.A. Guide to New York City," Elliot Willensky and Norval White noted the building’s façade as having "a quality almost like that of inlaid furniture," enriched by the contrasting brick ribbons on the upper floors. The Ardsley remains one of Central Park West’s most elaborately detailed and visually compelling Art Deco works.
