Two days before a presidential election that has filled many with anxiety about the future, Sunday, November 3 marked the end of Daylight Saving Time in the Northern Hemisphere. While this allows for easier starts in the mornings thanks to earlier sunrises, it does mean sunsets before 5:00 p.m.

At a time when many are in search of more light, apartments with skylights naturally offer this feature. They bring extra daylight into a home, which cannot be undervalued at a time when there are fewer hours of daylight and the sun is at a lower angle than in summer. Not only does this reduce the need for artificial lighting, but they can contribute to the heat gain of a space, which can in turn lead to lower energy bills. They also add effortless character to a space.
However, it is important to note that skylights are not "set it and forget it" features; they require care and attention to keep them looking pristine and keeping the apartment on the whole in good condition. As glass conducts heat better than other building materials, it allows heat to escape to the outside too easily; however, that this is easily remedied through properly insulated glass. An incorrectly installed skylight or problems with sealing can lead to leaks around the skylight that can spread to previously dry parts of the roof. However, Dwell notes that many potential problems are easily remedied by proper insulation and attention, and that they can be as useful as they are beautiful.

As a testament to the desirability of this feature, a top-floor penthouse with a skylit sculptural staircase entered contract with an asking price of $15,995,000. Located in Greenwich House, a garage turned luxury cooperative, both the entertaining and sleeping levels of the duplex penthouse are connected by the staircase and filled with natural light for it. The penthouse is topped with a fully irrigated and landscaped private roof terrace that offers an outdoor kitchen and access to an upper-level home office; it also allows for easy access to keep the skylight clean and the interiors looking bright.
