During this time of year, people all over the country flock to the Northeast for one last chance to see the changing leaves of autumn before they all blow away. While New York City is usually not first on the list for fall foliage seekers, 14% of our urban area is parkland and the city is famously beautiful during this time of year.

A lack of accessible green space is often cited as the biggest gripes of urban living, but with 30,000 acres of parkland, numerous new parks in the pipeline, and initiatives such as Million Trees New York, New Yorkers have plenty of greenery to appreciate for years to come. Recently, Eric Adams, the city's likely next mayor, supported the goal of allocating at least 1% of the city's nearly $100 billion annual budget to parks. This will likely result in more equitable access to well-maintained green spaces across the five boroughs and an increased urban tree canopy.

Some color is now evident on most of the city's estimated 5.2 million trees. According to the New York Fall Foliage Report, the metro area is nearing the "mid-point," while parts of the Hudson Valley and Catskills are at or approaching peak conditions.

It is still unclear how vibrant this season's colors will be. According to the US Forest Service, “a succession of warm, sunny days and cool, crisp but not freezing nights seems to bring out the most spectacular color displays.” Moisture also plays a significant role. "A warm wet spring, favorable summer weather, and warm sunny fall days with cool nights should produce the most brilliant autumn colors,” explains the government agency.
