A Sneak Peek Concert Welcomes a New Arts Space

APRIL 9, 2010

A new space for a growing organization equals good news for the city’s arts scene.

In 2008 non-profit arts organization ISSUE Project Room, currently housed in the Old American Can Factory in Gowanus, Brooklyn, won the bid for a 20-year, rent-free lease to occupy the landmark theater at 110 Livingston Street, a stunningly beautiful 4,800 square foot performance space (former home of the New York City Department of Education headquarters) in Downtown Brooklyn. Once renovated, this space will offer the organization—which offers films, music concerts, visual arts exhibitions and other programs (like April’s Music and Technology Month program)—more space to implement new programs and advance Brooklyn’s place as a cultural epicenter.

The good news is also a challenge: ISSUE must still raise well over half a million dollars towards the $2.5 million needed for basic renovations. They will be holding fund raising events such as the annual Soundwalk-a-thon fundraiser on Sunday June 27.

ISSUE is holding their first event in their new space-to-be, a pre-renovation candle-lit performance of minimalist composer Morton Feldman’s String Quartet No. 2 by Ne(x)tworks new music ensemble. The six-hour-long performance is free, and will offer audiences a preview of the 110 Livingston space. The event begins at 11:30 a.m. on Aprill 11th at 110 Livingston Street (at Boerum Place), Brooklyn.
