Baby Space: Outfitting a Nursery Without Sacrificing Style

JULY 22, 2010

Once you’ve accepted the fact that your new baby will be taking over the next 18 years of your life, giving up a room in your home will be easy.

The first step to setting up baby’s home base is getting the space itself ready. It’s important to pick a safe, healthy paint; Environmental organizations have established voluntary guidelines for “green” paint, and some companies even specialize in paint that doesn’t contain VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds).

Chains like Pottery Barn and Restoration Hardware offer nursery and kids’ furniture as stylish as the grown-up versions. SoHo baby emporium Giggle and Chelsea classic ABC Home baby shop top the list for indulgent grandparents; Mini Jake in Williamsburg has everything to rock a cool baby-cave.

A rocking chair may be one of your most important nursery additions, and a few new parents have claimed the Eames Rocker was almost a good enough excuse to have a baby. Unica Home and Knoll (their pint-sized versions of classic chairs are irresistible) offer plenty of modern design for baby. Modern Seed features great new designs–like this Scandi-cool wood-and-wire bassinet. And since the entire country of Sweden is dedicated to kids, IKEA carries a seemingly endless range of baby-room gear.

Need more ideas? Apartment Therapy kids’ site Odeedoh is a great resource—especially for creating baby space in small apartments, and Daddy Types gets dad involved in the action.
