Ballet to Zumba: Get Down to Get Fit
JUNE 28, 2011
Some of this summer’s hottest workout classes use booty-shaking and barre routines to get you moving.
Perhaps the impressive weight loss results by “Dancing with the Stars” celebs like Kelly Osbourne, the subsequent spawning of popular reality slim-down show, “Dance Your A** Off,” plus the sylphlike stars of Oscar-winning ballet saga “Black Swan” set things in motion: A growing number of sought-after fitness classes are featuring dance-based cardio, strength and yoga moves. Zumba is by far the leader of this pack. The Latin-inspired dance-fitness program blends hot international music and contagious dance steps to form a “fitness-party” concept that many converts are finding addictive. Every major city gym and health club offers it, so it’s easy to join the party regardless of your age or fitness level. The city’s parks even offer weekly outdoor Zumba classes on the Rockaway Beach Boardwalk.
Masala Bhangra classes modernize the high-energy traditional Bhangra (Hindi folk) dance steps with Bollywood moves. Yogaworks yoga studio chain is boogieing onto the bandwagon with Danceworks, a “high-energy, conscious movement dance class that builds heat, strength and flexibility.” West Side studio Pure Yoga is raising the barre with exclusive Figure 4 classes; created by a professional ballet dancer, Figure 4 combines elements of classic dance training, Pilates, yoga, and free weights.
Popular health club chains like Crunch offer a dizzying menu of dance classes that look as if they could score you a spot in a music video once you’ve mastered the grooves. Led by pros, these group fitness classes—including everything from Zumba, at least four types of ballet, even more Hip-Hop classes and dance grooves from seemingly every continent to Street Jazz, Glee Club (inspired by the popular TV series) and several opportunities to learn the finer points of pole dancing and burlesque—are, by all accounts, surprisingly forgiving of beginners or those with two left feet; the goal is to get your heart rate up, learn new moves, gain confidence and have fun doing it.
