Brainstorm Watch: New Work City Gives Startups a Home Base

APRIL 3, 2009

A new address in the city's coworking community welcomes office-free innovation.

New Work City refers to itself as the "answer to the cubicle" for good reason. The Manhattan community-based space opened its Westside doors in 2008 to lend a hand (and a seat) to entrepreneurial growth in New York City. This year-old outpost on the growing coworking frontier has put serious thought into providing infrastructure and support to folks who want to work for themselves. Members can broadcast and discuss what they're working on–and what they might be available to work on—at the group's web site, and teams can find people with suitable skills to help them get their ideas off the ground. Events held at the space range from resume workshops to startup idea brainstorming to cocktail meet-n-greets.

Several membership levels range from $25 (day rate) to $500 monthly. Members at all levels get access to high-speed wireless internet, a desk for the day (with a chair, of course), use of a conference room and free access to any events that may be going on at the space, and full-time members get a dedicated desk, storage space, 24/7 access, a mailing address, and a host of other perks that mean business when you're looking to grow one.
