Car and Driver: Where to Keep Your Wheels

DECEMBER 18, 2008

If you choose to keep your car in the city, you've got plenty of options

Owning a car in the city can be an inconvenience—until you really need to take a drive. The luckiest residents can keep their ride close to home. A townhouse with a garage is a rare luxury, mainly because the required "curb cut" is tough to get approved by the city. According to the New York Times, a garage can add between 5 and 25 percent to the value of a townhouse. Another solution for the car-owner-who-has-everything: At 200 11th Avenue an "en-suite sky garage" lets you roll right up to your apartment. On-site, indoor parking garages–many offering valet service–are a top perk at a number of new residences.

And at 123 Baxter Street an automated "robotic" parking system has grabbed some headlines for its gee-whiz appeal. If you haven't got your own spot, there are still plenty of options. Pay-to-park garages are everywhere. Monthly rates vary a great deal so it pays to do your homework. And there’s always the tried and true street parking with alternate side of the street issues, if you so choose.
