Eataly: Where There Is Space, There Is Food

SEPTEMBER 10, 2010

If New York City is turning into a big mall, does that make new Italian food hall Eataly a giant Sbarro?

Fresh on the heels of the launch of mega-retail-market-slash-food-court Limelight Market, the new giga-super-mega-food-market-slash-food-court Eataly (via Eater) will, as of August 31, be providing more variety in rotisserie chicken and pizza than could possibly be necessary in the six-block area that is the Flatiron District.

Which doesn’t mean the new addition at 200 5th Avenue isn’t a welcome one. Or that millions of hungry New Yorkers (and the tourists who love them) won’t soon make a beeline for this not-so-little bit of Italy created by restaurateurs Joseph and Lidia Bastianich and Mario Batali.

And there are a lot of details. The 36,500-square-foot market space–plus a 250-seat rooftop beer garden occupying another 6,000 square feet–boasts mozzarella and pasta made fresh on the premises. There’s an 80-seat steakhouse (Monzo)—with former Babbo chef Michael Toscano in the kitchen—as an alternative to counter service for orders of fresh, locally sourced fish and meat, pasta, antipasti, gelati, coffee and wine. If you’ve already eaten, there’s a bookstore, housewares, and (surprise!) more.
