Going up? Elevator Technology Takes It to the Next Level

NOVEMBER 19, 2009

New elevator technologies keep you moving in a vertical city.

We don't often think about elevator technology until the lunchtime ride starts to feel more like a commute. One brilliant new development has reduced traffic-jams at peak times–and gets major green points for increasing energy efficiency: The Miconic 10 system (or "smart elevator"), built by Schindler, balances passenger load by allocating the car that is most appropriate for the floors requested. Key in the floor you want; the system calculates your likely travel time and directs you toward the next available elevator going to that floor. You can find these in the New York Times building, the Hearst Tower, 30 Rockefeller Plaza, and in the famous glass-enclosed, high-speed elevators in the Times Square Marriott Marquis.

Double-deck elevators—developed to cut traffic jams in skyscrapers—allow passengers on two floors to ride at the same time. Elevators are separated to serve only odd or even floors. You'll find double-deck elevator cars at 388 Greenwich Street in TriBeCa, The Citigroup Center in Midtown, and the Statue of Liberty.
