Good Stuff Makes Good Neighbors

SEPTEMBER 25, 2009

A new service helps you a borrower or a lender be.

A group of community-conscious New Yorkers has hatched a new way to borrow your neighbor's stuff without having to actually know your neighbor (though it might be a great way to meet him/her.). Neigh*borrow started as a New York City service to connect friends, coworkers and neighbors so they could swap books, movies and household items via a private network. Their mission: "…to reduce inefficient consumption, conserve natural resources and strengthen communities."

How does it work?
You enter the item(s) you'd want to borrow (a power drill, or a copy of Caddyshack, for example), and if they're in the site's library, you'll get an email within 24 hours. Most items are available for less than a week. Then they'll deliver the items to your home, office or local coffee shop. They've stockpiled a collection of likely suspects (books, movies, games, golf clubs, etc.) through private funding, with more to come. The site has just launched, and at the moment is only available to Manhattan residents, but they're looking for members to anchor private lending groups on a much larger scale in other locations.
