Good Things in Threes: Frankie's Spuntino Arrives in the West Village

SEPTEMBER 9, 2011

A third time will undoubtedly charm West Village residents at the newest outpost of this beloved neighborhood restaurant.

Frankies Spuntino, the farm-fresh food and coffee bar that Carroll Gardens residents (457 Court Street) and Lower East Siders (17 Clinton Street) have been calling almost a second home since their introduction so many years ago, is, as of September 6, offering West Villagers another neighborhood favorite. The third in the Frankie’s phenomenon from restaurateurs Frank Castronovo and Frank Falcinelli of Prime Meats fame, Frankie’s 570 at 570 Hudson Street features the same winning combination of fresh-as-is-humanly-possible meats, cheeses and produce, a cozy, romantic, dining room (the new location has only 24 seats for now), a low-key, unfrenzied atmosphere (570 takes reservations unlike the others) and an extremely friendly staff that keeps the understated eateries at the top of everyone’s list.

The surprisingly reasonably-priced regular menu of simple-yet-sublime appetizers like Roasted Beets and Avocados with Balsamic Vinegar and an incredibly creamy stracciatella cheese with crostini, and main dishes like Sweet Sausage, Roasted Red Pepper and Onions over Creamy Polenta joins a sparkly brunch—only a few of the reasons Frankie’s is a no-brainer for a date or a supper with friends, family or just solo with a book. A separate cafe area, Cafe Pedlar, serves Stumptown coffee and fresh pastries. At its new location, Frankies offers cocktails by the pitcher and wines on tap (via NYTimes), and joins neighborhood treasures like The Little Owl and The Spotted Pig, but with far less attitude and that one perfect, available table by the window.
