(Le) Poisson Rouge: Notable New Art for a Classic Village Venue

OCTOBER 10, 2008

Brilliant booking at a downtown destination brings new life to the city’s music scene

(Le) Poisson Rouge
At the former home of the historic Village Gate in Greenwich Village, a new venue is bringing vitality and diversity to the New York City music scene. The folks behind the club’s latest incarnation are passionate about music and have long dreamed of creating a program of experimental, modern and genre-defying entertainment at an accessible downtown spot. As a major contributor to the programming here, the Wordless Music series—which has been credited with bringing the worlds of classical and contemporary instrumental music and genres like indie rock and electronica together for performances that comprise “a completely new concert experience”—has found a new home here as well. The space itself is elegant, sophisticated and comfortable—it’s large enough to seat 800, yet still feels intimate. From Steve Reich and Philip Glass to John Zorn and Lou Reed to They Might Be Giants to Brooklyn indie darlings Deerhunter, the calendar offerings vary, but each night but never fails to surprise and impress. Extra bonus: The music playing on their web site is so nice you'll want to leave it on.
