Map Your Habitat, Keep Your City Healthy
FEBRUARY 19, 2010
Habitat Map helps keep track of how healthy our environment really is.
The New York City-based environmental health organization (of the same name) behind Habitat Map wanted to find a way to maximize the impact of community voices on urban planning decisions. The result is a neighborhood mapping and social networking platform that will open your eyes about the impact you and your neighbors have on the environment.
Members can create profiles and add markers and maps that correspond to specific locations as well as topics like solar power use, water use, recycling and sustainability-oriented businesses. An ongoing project of Solar One, for example, involves a Solar Powered New York City map that will eventually incorporate detailed descriptions of every solar array in New York City. A little closer to home: This map details where sewage ends up once you flush the loo. You can also search for maps that match your areas of interest, and add to the project by creating your own.
