New Developments In The News

JULY 21, 2008

New Irving Place condo will have cool slidey windows, West Chelsea gets some landmarks, and the O'Toole building has nothing to do with Peter.
A new 9-unit condominium at 57 Irving Place will be distinguished by 15-foot-wide louvered screens that can be moved along an external steel track, forming "a kinetic sculpture reflecting the changing needs of its occupants." Its residents will likely enjoy the 52-foot open living/dining areas, double-height ceilings, glass-walled bedroom suites that open onto terraces and indoor lap pool planned for the residence as well. The building will be designed by Audrey Matlock, whose signature unique glass façades and Windows That Do Really Cool Things are in evidence at the Chelsea Modern around the corner at 447 West 18th Street as well.

The busy New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission has approved the West Chelsea Historic District as the city's 92nd such district, expressing the Commission's continued commitment to preserving reminders of the city's past, noting in particular the industrial character that sets West Chelsea apart from midtown to the north and Greenwich Village to the south.

St. Vincent's Catholic Medical Center is still in discussion with the Landmarks Preservation Commission on what to do with The Edward and Theresa O'Toole Medical Services Building on the west side of Seventh Avenue between 12th and 13th Streets. The Commission's members consider the 1964 O'Toole Building an important example of modern architecture, calling it "the Village's own Guggenheim." The hospital feels that its demolition is necessary for it to function as such and would prefer to replace it with a state-of-the-art facility.
