Scaled-back design plans for 746 Madison Avenue get a green light

The Landmarks Preservation Commission voted unanimously to approve a downsized version of an ambitious plan to build 12 stories of residential condo and 2 floors of retail space at 746 Madison Avenue between 64th and 65th Streets. The original proposition—which was met with opposition from some community and civic organizations—would have connected the new addition to an1897-designed townhouse on the southwest corner. The amended version only adds three stories to the Avenue address that houses popular French bistro La Goulue. The new plan also nixes the condos and would be designed to look similar to the existing two-story structure, which would be restored. In its past, the original cast-iron-fronted building has been home to a synagogue and a school, and through the 1940s was occupied by the Navy League of the United States as a workroom where women sewed clothing for the children of enlisted Navy men.
