Belnord Landmark Celebrates 100 Years
On September 18, 2008, the Belnord apartment complex celebrated its Centennial in a grand and classic style befitting the graceful Upper West Side residential landmark.
The Belnord, which occupies the full block between 86th and 87th Streets and Broadway and Amsterdam Avenues on the Upper West Side, is perhaps best known for its beautiful courtyard. Arched entryways on 86th Street open into a graceful, landscaped interior that surrounds a stately central fountain, recalling courtyards of Paris and Venice. In its early days, the courtyard was known as the largest of its kind–perhaps in the world– at 94 feet wide by 231 feet long– and boasts an underground delivery tunnel reachable via a ramped driveway from West 87th Street, allowing "tenants and their drivers personal pick up and drop off service."
