New Developments In The News

Find out a little more about a block, a building, the city—maybe even your neighbors—when you get your daily SmartMatch recommendations.
A handful of elegant, new buildings will add style to uptown and downtown blocks, and midtown can't get enough tall towers.
The trend toward chic, diminutive buildings with maximum impact continues uptown at 271 West 122nd Street. The six-story condominium planned for this hot block—a few doors down from the similar new residence designed by Martina Barcarella at number 265—will offer a duplex apartment, a triplex penthouse, and full-floor units on the third and fourth floors. Four glass balconies will be a stylish addition to a distinctive, modern white front. Look for Zebra wood cabinetry, Sub Zero refrigerators and Wolf ranges in the equally glamorous kitchens and Lacava vanities and river stone showers in the bathrooms. There will be even more to love in Harlem when the six-unit condo planned for 235 West 113th Street is finished. The new residence will complement the block's classic brownstones with a fenced front yard and floor-to-ceiling, multi-paned and arched windows. The garden duplex will feature a wood-burning fireplace and two skylights.
The small-building-big-impact direction continues downtown at 350 West Broadway between Broome and Grand Streets in SoHo. The new residence planned there will contain eight vast, full-floor residences with carefully crafted, top-line features in the kitchen and baths.
Tall towers get no less respect. Construction has begun on a 57-story residential tower at 605 West 42nd Street. The full-service building was designed by noted architect Costas Kondylis and interior design will be by Phillipe Starck. The new residence will offer parking as well as a third-floor coffee bar, a yoga room and a roof deck with a swimming pool and lounge. A children's playground and a putting green may also be included at ground level in the newly-popular residential zone whose recent highlights include the Kondylis-designed Atelier and the nearby Orion.
