Tenants victorious again over greedy Stuy Town Goliaths; Fundie-founded organization throws latest wrench in plans for Ground Zero mosque.

The New York State Supreme Court has ruled that tenants at Stuyvesant Town and Peter Cooper Village—the sprawling formerly-middle-income apartment complex —are entitled to retroactive damages for rent overcharges that began when owners MetLife and Tishman Speyer illegally deregulated their apartments. The decision follows an October, 2009 ruling by the New York Court of Appeals which found that the aforementioned owners were not entitled to deregulate apartments while receiving tax abatements from the city.

The American Center for Law and Justice—founded by the Reverend Pat Robertson—has filed a suit challenging a recent decision by the Landmarks Preservation Commission that gave the green light to the proposed development of a mosque and Islamic center near Ground Zero. The suit was filed on behalf of a firefighter who survived the Twin Towers’ collapse in the terrorist attacks. The ongoing debate over the proposed development has reached a nationwide level in recent weeks with discussions of tolerance, prejudice and emotional attachment to the traumatic event.
