New Developments in the News

Unofficial renderings may be a sneak peak at Drake Hotel site spire; Big names show up for proposal request info meeting on Brooklyn Bridge Pier 1 project.

A couple of “unofficial” renderings of a very skinny—and very tall—tower at the site of the former Drake Hotel at 50 East 57th Street have shown up on New York City real estate sites. The proposed Rafael Vinoly tower may reach 1,420 feet, according to the aforementioned sketches, which are allegedly based on descriptions by people with inside information on the design process.

An impressive—and increasingly familiar—sampling of the city’s top developers and architects attended a recent informational meeting concerning Request for Proposals for the hotel and condo units to be built on Pier 1 at Brooklyn Bridge Park. Representatives for Related Companies, Hines, Two Trees, Andre Balazs, Douglaston Development, Rockrose, TF Cornerstone, Starwood Capital, The Dermot Company, and Muss Development as well as architectural firms including TEN Architectos, FXFowle, Rogers Marvel, Architetonica, and Artimus were among those present. Brooklyn Bridge Park is also in talks with Con Edison over a three-acre parcel of vacant land near the Manhattan Bridge—the future site of a tower up to 130 feet tall, a tide pool and additional parkland—that will complete the 85-acre waterfront park.
