Paragraph Workspace for Writers: A Room of Our Own

OCTOBER 24, 2008

New York City writers get a quiet place to create

Every writer knows that the best work gets done in a quiet, private corner. For those who aren't lucky enough to have a spacious home office or a quaint little garret, Joy Parisi and Lila Cecil, writers who received their MFA from the New School, have found a way to provide a creative space for scribes to scribble undisturbed.

Paragraph workspace for writers is a shared 2,500 foot loft in Union Square which offers more than the comforts of home. The space is divided into a writing room, a kitchen and lounge area. The writing room has 38 partitioned desks where writers work in a quiet, stress-free atmosphere. Workspaces provide a feeling of privacy, each with blocked sight lines from other writers. There's a couch, a fireplace, a balcony, lockers, coffee, high-speed internet access, and printers, so all you need to bring are your ideas and your laptop (or pen and paper if you're so inclined.).

The space is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. To accommodate the starving and the struggling, memberships are kept reasonable, and monthly, quarterly and semi-annual options are offered. Any kind of writers are welcome as long as they're working on a serious writing project–there's a basic application process–and members receive a PIN code for entry. The space also hosts events like readings and roundtable discussions, which are free for members.
