Shoolbred's: Warmth and whiskey in the East Village

APRIL 4, 2008

Welcome to our new look! Now you'll find out a little more about a block, a building, the citymaybe even your neighborswhen you get your daily SmartMatch recommendations.

Unabashedly part of the “new” East Village yet unlike the cookie-cutter mod-décor spaces that have been mushrooming there in recent years, Shoolbred’s offers real pub grub (“Bangers in a Blanket,” and similar) and an impressive selection of beers, bourbon (20) and single-malts (36) with a serious old-world clubroom atmosphere.

Co-owner and five-time Tony-winning costume designer William Ivey Long ("The Producers, "Hairspray," "Young Frankenstein," etc.) chose the name in honor of his Scots grandfather and reportedly spent $1M on reconstruction at the former location of neighborhood staple Jade Mountain Chinese restaurant. Patrons can curl up by a crackling fire in an intimate lounge area with oversized leather club chairs, unless they manage to snag the tiny, private booth in the back. The spot has been attracting a good-looking, affluent set of serious drinkers but avoiding the dreaded cosmo crowds. The kitchen is open from 4pm til midnight, and the house-made spicy fried wontons are dangerously addictive.
