Signs of the Times: They Know How New York Moves

FEBRUARY 20, 2009

One moving company is getting attention by taking a pointed–and funny–look at the people in your neighborhood.

Running a successful business in the city is a challenge in any economy. The best bets are often the low-glamour, high-necessity services that meet a basic need. Example: movers. Pretty much no-one is going to heft their own sofa from Gramercy to Greenpoint. To that end, FlatRate Moving has been posting their low-budget, high-snark signs all over town, catching eyes and blogger attention.

The "We Know How New York Moves" campaign is aimed squarely at urbanites with a sense of humor. In the clever series of "checklist" signs, the "Hipster Move" has you headed for Bushwick, Greenpoint, Williamsburg or Fort Greene for reasons that include "Artistic Differences" and "Writers Block" with a to-do list that includes "Separate Proust, Nietzsche and Freud collections in specialzed FlatRate book boxes." On the "West Village Move" checklist? "Exfoliate." The "Economy Sucks Move" includes "Mom's House" and "Significant Other's," and the "Growing Family Move" suggests that you may be relocating to Park Slope, Park Slope or Park Slope. (And if that weren't enough to stand out from the crowd, FlatRate will provide free pick-up and drop-off to the charity of your choice.)
